Vocabulary from Interdependence Unit- focusing on Organisms' Roles and Relations

Photosynthesis Process in which organisms use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make food (glucose- sugar)
Decomposition The process that breaks down wastes and dead organisms
Producer Organism that makes its own food (plants)
Consumer Organism that obtains energy by eating other organisms (ex:fish)
Examples of Decomposers Examples: Fungi, bacteria, earthworms
Glucose Type of sugar produced by plants during photosynthesis
What gas is produced as a waste product of photosynthesis? Oxygen
What is the source of energy for most photosynthesis? Sunlight
Abiotic A nonliving part of an ecosystem (ex: weather, rocks, water, light)
Biotic factors All of the living parts of an ecosystem
Adaptations The behaviors and physical characteristics of a species that allows them to live successfully in a particular habitat
Ecosystem All the living and nonliving things that interact in an area

Herbivore Organisms that only consume plant material

Symbiotic relationship where both organisms benefit Mutualism
Commensalism Symbiotic relationship where one organism benefits and the other is neither benefitted nor harmed
Symbiotic relationship between a tick and a dog Parasitism
Direct observation Method used to calculate population where scientist counts every organisms one by one
Indirect observation Method used to calculate population where scientist observed signs of the organism (feces
Scientists count the number of organisms in a small area and use this information to estimate how many organisms are in an entire ecosystem Sampling
