Rock Vocabulary Terms

| intrusive or plutonic | Rocks that are solidified below the Earth's surface. |
| extrusive or volcanic | Rocks that are solidified above the Earth's surface. |
| sedimentary rocks | Rocks that are composed of sediments. |
| metamorphic rocks | Rocks that have been altered due to heat and pressure. |
| magma | Molten rock formed below the Earth's surface. |
| lava | Molten rock formed on the surface of the Earth. |
| foliated | Mineral crystals that are arranged in parallel bands along which the rock tends to break |
| unfoliated | Mineral crystals are not arranged in parallel bands. |
| dike | Narrow, flat formation of igneous rock formed in cracks in existing rocks. |
| evaporite | Sedimentary rock that is left when water evaporates and leaves behind mineral deposits. |
| sill | Sheet-like mass of igneous rock. |
| metamorphism | Changing of one type of rock into another as a result of heat and pressure. |
| igneous | Rocks formed by the cooling and hardening of molten rock. |
| rock cycle | Continuous changing of rocks from one type to another. |
| sediments | Small pieces of rocks, shells, or the remains of plants and amimals. |
| compaction | Process by which sediments are pressed together to form rocks. |
| strata | Layers of sedimentary rocks. |
| cementation | Process by which sediments are glued together by minerals dissolved in water. |
