What info should the nurse provide to a clt who is starting beclomethasone dipropionate(QVAR) for long-term mgmt of asthma? Inhaled glucocorticoids are generally safe. Use spacer during admin by MDI. Rinse mouth & gargle after inhaling dose (prevents oropharyngeal condidiasis). Engage in weight-bearing exercises & ensure adequate intake of calcium & vit D. (to avoid bone loss)
Which of the following instructions should be given to a clt who has been prescribed albuterol (Proventil) and beclomethasone dipropionate (QVAR) inhalers for the control of asthma? Use the albuterol inhaler 5 min before using the beclomethasone inhaler. (The beta2-agonist promotes bronchodilation and enhances absorption of the glucocorticoid.)
Albuterol (Proventil) is used in the treatment of asthma to Promote bronchodilation.
What statement made by the client indicates that she has understood discharge teaching in the proper use of salmeterol(serevent)? "I will take this medication regularly every 12 hours." (used for long-term control not to abort an asthma attack.)
A clt starting oral prednisone for treatment of chronic asthma should report signs of weight gain and fluid retention can result from oral glucocorticoid use.

A client taking triamcinolone acetonide (azmacort) is instructed to use a spacer. What is the rationale for using a spacer w/an MDI? A spacer is used w/an MDI to decrease the amt of the med that will reach the mouth and throat, and increase the amt of med that will reach its site of action (lung mucosa).
Theophylline: action Clt should avoid caffeine when using this oral medication.
Albuterol: action Advise the client to take this short-acting beta2-agonist to abort an acute asthma attack.
Salmeterol: action Clt can take this inhaled beta2-agonist every 12 hr.
Montelukast: action Advise the clt to take this med once daily at bedtime.
