QuestionAnswer
What is mitosis? process by which the nucleus divides during cell division
What is cell division? process by which the cell divides, 2 daughter cells are produced identical to the parent
What is cytokinesis? the cytoplasm and organelles of the new cells are divided between the daughter cells
Where is DNA found? within chromosomes which are within the nucleus
What is chromatin the material of the chromosomes in the form of long, thin threads (unorganized)
Why are genes important? they contain hereditary information
Interphase between phases, growth of cell, DNA replicates
Prophase thickening of the chromatin in the nucleus to form chromosomes, centrioles move to the poles, spindle fibers form
Metaphase chromosomes line up along the middle (equator) of the cell, each chromosome attaches to spindle fibers
Anaphase separation of the chromatids from each other, each chromatid moves away from the middle and toward the poles
Telophase tightly coilded chromosomes unfold and lengthen (become chromatin), 2 new nuclear membranes form around chromotids, spindle fibers diappear, cytokinesis takes place
How many daughter cells are produced during Mitosis? 2 daughter cells
How many daughter cells are produced during Meiosis? 4 daughter cells
What is the purpose of Mitosis? repair and growth
What is the purpose of Meiosis? to produce sex cells
What is the process called for forming gametes? Meiosis
Which process forms an identical number of chromosomes? Mitosis
Which process forms half (haploid) number of chromosomes? Meiosis
What is the process by which sex cells develop in the gonads? gametogenesis
During Oogenesis, what is produced? 3 polar bodies, 1 mature ovum
During spermatogenesis, what is produced? sperm
what is called when the sperm and egg unite? fertilization
What type of fertilization will most organisms living in water use? external
What is a risk with external fertilization? small number of young survive and mature.
Where is sperm produced? testes
Where are eggs produced? ovaries
Where does fertilization occur? fallopian tube
What is it called when a fertilized egg divides in 2 cells, then 4, etc. cleavage
Where does an embryo implant? uterus

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
