Bone Quiz Anatomy

Skeletal System Review

QuestionAnswer
Compact Bone Osteocytes and layers of matrix are clustered around a central canal
Spongy Bone Osteocytes and layers of the matrix are NOT clustered around a canal
Periosteum Fibrous connective tissue surrounding the bone
Epiphysis End of bone
Osteocytes Transport nutrients and wastes to and from nearby cells.
Endochondral bones Long bones
Intramembranous bones Flat bones
Epiphyseal Plate A band of cartilage at the ends of bones
Osteoblast Deposit bony matrix
Osteoclast Break down calcified matrix
Vitamin A Necessary for osteoblast and osteoclast development
Vitamin C Required for collagen synthesis required for bone matrix
Vitamin D Aids in the proper absorption of calcium
Calcium Stored in bones and provides matrix but mainly used in muscle contraction
Phosphate Combines with calcium to form a salt which is stored in the bone called hydroxyapatie
GH (growth hormones) Secreted by the pituitary gland to stimulate division of cartilage cells in the epiphyseal plate
Sex hormones Turn on during puberty and cause long bones to grow and ossification of the growth plates.
Examples of flat bones Cranium, rib cage
Examples of long bones Phalanges
Examples of short bones Carpals, tarsals
Examples of irregular bones Vertebrae, facial bones
