World Geo Unit 2

World Climate Patterns/Earth-Sun Relations

QuestionAnswer
Define Weather the state of the atmosphere at any one place or time. (short term)
Climate the average weather conditions of a region over the LONG term. (Season, Month Annually)
How much sunlight reaches the earths surface 49% of sun’s radiation actually reaches the earth’s surface
Lack of cloud cover Day AND Night DAY : No clouds = higher day temperatures NO clouds to deflect / block heat from reaching the surface. NIGHT: NO cloud cover = cold nightly temperatures. (heat escapes, nothing to TRAP it.)
Clear Day AND clouds over BEFORE night DAY : No clouds = higher day temperatures NO clouds to deflect / block heat from reaching the surface. cloud cover PRIOR to night = = warmer and muggy nights. heat being TRAPPED during the night…like a blanket AND precipitation in the clouds.
Cloudy Day AND NO clouds at Night DAY : Cloud cover = lower daily temperatures Clouds deflect/block out sun & heat. NIGHT : NO cloud cover = even COLDER nightly temperatures. Already cooler temperatures become even lower.
Cloudy Day AND cloudy Night Day: Cloud cover = lower daily temperatures Clouds deflects/blocks out heat Night: Cloud cover = relatively constant temperatures in the night. Clouds traps current air temperatures and keeps them relatively constant.
ROTATION of the earth .The earth rotates (spins) on its axis… .In a Counter-clockwise direction… .which takes 24 hours and results in day and night.
REVOLUTION of the earth The earth revolves (orbits) around the sun Again in a counter-clockwise direction… it takes 365 days and results in seasons.
Well the earth get closer to the sun???? At NO point is the Earth closer to the sun during its orbit …. Temperature variation is in NO WAY influenced by distance from the sun.
Tilt of the Earth The earth is tilted on its axis @ 23.5o At different times of the year, the North (or South) is pointed towards the sun, while other times pointed away from the sun. Causes daylight to be longer or shorter. Contributes to the seasons as well.
Day vs Night & Length of day (daylight!) Rotating axis causes day and night Tilt on axis causes length of day to be longer/shorter.When hemisphere is pointed towards the sun that hemisphere receives more heat radiation. More hours of the sung giving longer days, Warmer temperatures
Equinox Sun is directly overhead @ 12 noon on the equator. In the North, occurs Sept. 21 (Spring/Fall) & March 21(Vernal/Spring).Equal length of night & day on earth. northern hemisphere nor the southern hemisphere are pointed towards nor away from the sun.
Solstice Sun is directly over head @ 12 noon on 23.5o (N or S.) Occurs Dec 21 & June 21. Winter & Summer which are the shortest & longest days. Northern hemisphere pointed TOWARDS the sun in Summer. Northern hemisphere pointed AWAY from the sun in Winter
Season changes All driven by changes in: the amount of available sunlight and the sun's intensity . These will be determined by: The tilt of the earth on its axis. The rotation of the earth on its axis. The position of the earth in its revolution around the sun
