EARTHQUAKE

Words and Definitions

QuestionAnswer
Epicenter A point, directly above the true center of the earthquake.
Fault A fracture in a rock formation along which there has been movement of the blocks of rock on either side of the fracture. Faults are caused by plate-tectonic forces.
Focus The focus is the point of origin of an earthquake
Lava Lava is the molten, fluid rock that issues from a volcano or volcanic vent.
Lithosphere The lithosphere is the crust and upper mantle of the earth.
Magnitude A measure of the total amount of energy released by an earthquake, as indicated on the Richter scale.
Volcanoes A volcano is a vent in the earth's surface.
Seismograph A seismograph is the device used to measure
Tsunami A tsunami is a large sea wave produced by a seaquake or undersea volcanic eruption.
