Bio Exam 3

QuestionAnswer
Gaia Hypothesis Frederic Clements said Ecology was to the study of communities like physiology was to the study of individual organisms. James Lovelock, responsible for Gaia hypothesis said we should consider the entire planet as a living organism.
Domain Taxonomic category above kingdom. Inclusion within a particular domain requires similarities in basic cellular biochemistry. 3 domains: bacteria, archaea, eukarya with archaea and eukarya being more similar than bacteria.
Bacteria Vs. Archaea (bacteria differ in having) 1. Different RNA sequence 2. Peptidoglycan cell well that can be thin or dick 3. No distinctive lipid (branched hydrocarbon) layer around cell 4. Many disease causing representatives, archaea dont cause disease.
Bacteria benefits important to all life processes and to the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients.
Gram - Positive Bacteria (2,200 sp) stains purple with crystal violet, specific for thick peptidoglycan layer in cell wall that traps crystal violet within cell cytoplasm). ex: bacillus thuringiensis, source of biological control used to produce insecticides; lactobacillus, source of chees
Proteobacteria (gram negative bacteria; 1200 sp) Thick phospholipid bilayer, impedes antibiotic drugs and host immune system. Thin inner peptidoglycan layer.
Proteobacteria : ubiquitous, disease causing forms E. coli; harmless strains synthesize vitamin K and protect humans from pathogenic bacteria, other strains cause food poisoning Salmonella; colonize protein rich foods Yersinia: Bubonic plague, skin hemorrhage
Proteobacteria : symbiotic, nitrogen fixing bacteria Rizobium Bradyrizobium occur symbiotically in legumes of plants. increase the availability of nitrogen by fixing N2 gas into ammonia. Plans can use to make amino acids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Plants provide bacteria sugar

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
