Skeletal System Vocabulary Terms

Epiphysis The expanded portion at the end of a long bone
Articulates Forms a joint
Articular Cartilage Hyaline cartilage that covers the ends of bones
Diaphysis The shaft of a long bone
Periosteum Fibrous connective tissue covering the surface of a bone
Process Bony projections where ligaments and tendons attach
Compact Bone (Cortical Bone) Dense tissue in which cells are organized in osteons (Haversion Systems) with no spaces
Spongy Bone (Cancellous Bone) Bone that consists of bars and plates separated by irregular spaces
Osteon (Haversion System) A cylinder-shaped unit including bone cells that surround a central canal
Central Canal (Haversion Canal) Tiny channel in bone tissue that houses a blood vessel
Osteocyte A mature bone cell
Osteoblast A bone forming cell
Osteoclast A cell that erodes bone
Ossification The formation of bone tissue
Medullary Cavity Cavity containing marrow within the diaphysis of a long bone
Marrow Connective tissue in spaces within bones that include blood-forming stem and progenitor cells
Intramembranous Bone Bone that forms from membranelike layers of primitive connective tissue
Endochondral Bone Bone that begins as hyaline cartilage that is subsequently replaced by bone tissue
Epiphyseal Plate Cartilagenous layer within the long bone epiphysis that grows
Lacunae Bony chambers that enclose osteocytes
Canaliculi Microscopic canal that connects the lacunae of bone
Perforating Canals (Volkmann's Canals) Transverse canals connecting the Haversion canals
Primary Ossification Center Original location of bone development in the diaphysis of the forming bone
Secondary Ossification Center Location of bone development in the epiphysis of a growing bone
Hematopoisis Blood cell formation
