Chapter 1: Weather

Mr. S 4th Grade

QuestionAnswer
What affects the temperature of the air? How much light energy from the sun reaches the Earth.
Which sunlight, direct or indirect, causes highter temperatures? direct
What time of day is the temperature usually the lowest? before sunrise
Does more daylight cause higher or lower temperatures? higher
What time of day does sunlight hit the earth most directly? noon
Why is pavement hotter than grass? because it absorbs heat
What happens to the alcohol in the thermometer as it gets hotter?why? when the air around the tube is hot the liquid will rise
Which color absorbs more heat? black
What is Air Pressure? Pressing down of the layer of air that surrounds the earth
How is a low pressure area formed? When the air gets warmer and lighter it rises, so the air pushes down on the surface with less pressure causing a low pressure area
How is a high pressure area formed? When the air gets colder and heavier it pushes down harder on the surface causing a high pressure area
How is wind created? by cool air sinking and hot air rising
What is used to measure air pressure? Barometer
how does a barometer work? It measures air pressure by calculating how much mercury rises and falls
How does a gauge work? I measures pressure by moving a pointer on a dial
How can you calculate speed direction? by watching things move
What is a wind vane? it is used to tell wind direction
What does a wind sock measure? speed and strength of wind
What does a anemometer measure exact wind speed
Which air holds more water vapor, hot or cold? hot
Define precipitation? moisture that falls from clouds to the ground
How is snow formed?
What is lighting? static electricity
What is a forecast? a prediction made by a meteorologist
What does a meteorologist study? Weather
List all the things meteorologist keep track of to predict weather? hight and low temperatures, humidity, air pressure, precipitation, fronts, air masses
What tools do meteorologists use? computer monitors and ratars
What does the National Weather service do? Issues warnings and weather watches when weather conditions are right for predicting severe weather
What should you do if there is a Tornado? go to inside room with no windows
What should you do if there is a hurricane? leave the area and leave early
How do air masses move? by air pressure and wind
What is a front? where two air masses meet
How is a front formed? When air masses meet, they stay separate, the line where they meet is called the front
What happens when a cold air mass pushes a warm air mass?
what causes changes in air temperature less or more direct sunlight
how do diffrent surfaces on the earth effect air temperature becaues diffrent surfaces asorbe diffrent amounts of sunlight
how is air temperature measured with a theramometer
