Earth's Landforms

NC EOG 5th Grade Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
landform A shaped feature of the earth's surface that is produced by natural forces.
weathering The natural breakdown of rocks at the earth's surface.
erosion The movement of rocks, dirt and soil by ice, water, wind and gravity.
abrasion The process of rocks and stones scraping against other solid rocks and wearing them down.
runoff Water from precipitation that moves from higher ground to lower ground.
physical weathering A type of weathering in which rocks are broken apart or grinded off.
chemical weathering A type of weathering in which water changes minerals in the original rock.
water erosion A cause of erosion that involves rivers, streams and rain.
wind erosion A cause of erosion that carries sand in the air.
ice erosion A cause of erosion that involves frozen water and glaciers.
gravity A force that pulls things down.
plants A cause of weathering that involves roots growing into rocks.
tributary A river that doesn't make it to the ocean.
stream A small flow of water that usually begins at a spring or as runoff.
meander A change in direction of a river or stream.
deposition Rocks, sand, sediment, and pebbles that are deposited at the mouth of a river.
mouth The place where the river and ocean meet.
river A large body of flowing water.
delta A place at the mouth of the river where sediment is deposited.
flood plain A place along a river that is created when the river overflows or floods.
source The place where a stream begins.
valley A V Shape cut in the land that usually contains a river.
canyon A valley with steep sides
Oxbow lake A lake formed from a meander in a river.
