Disorders of the Liver

| Liver functions | Produce bile, meatabolize and store nutrients, and detoxifies drugs and waste products |
| Fatty liver | Triglycerides build up and liver enlarges; is reversible |
| What is the causes of Fatty liver? | Alcohol, too little proteins, infection, cancer, drugs and diabetes |
| Hepatitis | Inflammation of liver; Causes- microbes, alcohol, drugs and supplements |
| What are the symptoms of Hepatitis? | Fatigue, joint/muscle pain, nausea, fever and jaundice |
| What is the diet recommendation for Hepatitis? | Normal diet or high calorie and protein |
| Cirrhosis | Harden of liver w/ scar tissue; irreversible |
| What are the symptoms of Cirrhosis? | Portal hypertension, esophageal varices, ascites, decrease blood volume to kidney, decrease production of clotting factors, and malnutrition |
| Portal Hypertension | High BP in portal vein |
| Esophageal varices | Buldging vessels in esophagus |
| Ascites | Fluid in the abdominal cavity |
| What is the diet therapy for Cirrhosis? | Usually restiction of protein, sodium and fluid. Extra cal, vits & minerals. No alcohol or herbal supplements |
