Chapter 27

The reproductive System

QuestionAnswer
From the testes, the sperm are delivered to the body exterior through a system of ducts including? Epididymis, ductus deferens, ejaculatory ducts, urethra
Scrotum? Is a sac of skin and superficial fascia that hangs outside of the abdominopelvic cavity at the root of the penis
Dartos muscle? A layer of smooth muscle in the superficial fascia, wrinkles the scrotal skin
Cremaster muscle? Bands of skeletal muscle that arise from the internal oblique muscles of the trunk, elevate the testes
Tunica Vaginalis? Derived from an out pocketing of the peritoneum
Tuncia Albuginea? The fibrous capsule of the testis.
Lolubes? Septa extending from the tunica albuginea divide the testis into wedge-shaped
Seminiferous tubules? Containing one to four tightly coiled seminiferous tubules (the sperm factories
Myoid cells Surrounding each seminiferous tubules are smooth muscle
Tubulus rectus? A straight tubule that conveyes seprm into the rete testis
Interstitial cells? "Leydig cells" lying in the soft connective tissue surrounding the seminiferous tubules. They produce testosterone
Testicular arteries? Branch from the abdominal aorta superior to the pelvis gonadal arteries, supply the testes
Testicular veins? Draining the testes arise from a network called the pampiniform plexus that surrounds the portion of the testicular artery within the scrotum like a climbing vine
Pampiniform plexus? Absorbs heat from the arterial blood, cooling it before it enters the testes, provides an addition way to keep the testes at their cool temperature
Penis? is a coplatory organ designed to deliver sperm into the female reproductive tract
Perineum? Is the diamond-shaped region located between the pubic symphysis anteriorly
Glans penis? Enlarged tip
Prepuce or foreskin? Skin covering penis is loose, it slides distally to form a cuff
Corpus spongiosum? Surrounding the urethra and expands distally to form t glans and proximal to form the part of the root (Bulb)
Bulb of the penis? is covered externally by the sheetlike bulbospongiosus muscle and is secured to the urogenital diaphragm
Corpora cavernosa? The paired dorsal erectile bodies, make up most of the penus and are bound by fibrous tunica albuginea
Crura of the penis? Surround by ischiocavernosus muscle and anchors to the pubic arch of the bony peevis
Epidiymis? The cup-shape, the immature, nearly nonmotile sperm that leaves the testis are moved slowly along the duct of the epididymis through fluid that contains a number of antibiotics Sperm are ejaculated from epidiymis
The ductus deferens Carrying away from the epidiymis through the inguinal canal into the pelvic cavity and then joins with the ducts of the seminal vesicle (a gland) to form the short ejaculatory duct
Ejaculatory ducts? Ducts enters the prostate, there it empties into the urethra
Urethra Terminal portion of the male duct system
The prostatic urethra Portion surrounded by the prostate
The membranous Intermediate part of the urethra in the urogenital diaphragm
Spongy (penile) urethra Which runs through the penis and opens to the outside at the external urethral orifice
Accessory glands Include a paired seminal vesicles and bulbourethral gland and the single prostate Together they produced the bulk of semen
The seminal Vesicles/Seminal glands Lies on the posterior bladder surface
