Mineral Terms and Definitions to Review for the Test

| What is an element? | Pure substance which cannot be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary chemical means. |
| What is a compound? | a substance made of two or more elements that have been chemically joined or bonded together. |
| What are silicate minerals? | minerals that contain silicon and oxygen |
| What are non-silicate minerals? | minerals that do not contain silicon and oxygen |
| What are Native Elements? | minerals composed of only one element. Examples include gold (Au), platinum (Pt), diamond (C), copper (Cu), sulfur (S), & silver (Ag) |
| What are Carbonates? | minerals that contain combinations of carbon and oxygen in their chemical structure. Example, Calcite |
| What are Halides? | compounds that form when atoms of the elements fluorine, chlorine, iodine or bromine combine with sodium, potassium, or calcium. Ex. Halite |
