Mineral Terms and Definitions to Review for the Test

QuestionAnswer
What is a mineral? a naturally occurring solid consisting of a single element or compound
What is an element? Pure substance which cannot be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary chemical means.
What is a compound? a substance made of two or more elements that have been chemically joined or bonded together.
What are silicate minerals? minerals that contain silicon and oxygen
What are non-silicate minerals? minerals that do not contain silicon and oxygen
What are Native Elements? minerals composed of only one element. Examples include gold (Au), platinum (Pt), diamond (C), copper (Cu), sulfur (S), & silver (Ag)
What are Carbonates? minerals that contain combinations of carbon and oxygen in their chemical structure. Example, Calcite
What are Halides? compounds that form when atoms of the elements fluorine, chlorine, iodine or bromine combine with sodium, potassium, or calcium. Ex. Halite
What are Oxides? compounds that form when an element combines chemically with oxygen. Ex magnetite.
What are Oxides? compounds that form when an element combines chemically with oxygen. Ex magnetite.
What are Sulfates? contain sulfur and oxygen. Ex, gypsum.
What are Sulfates? contain sulfur and oxygen. Ex, gypsum.
