| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What type of weather does a high pressure typically bring? | Fair weather, puffy clouds, no precipitation. |
| What does a barometer measure? | Air pressure. |
| What does an anemometer measure? | wind speed. |
| In what direction does the jet stream flow in the United States? | West to East |
| How would a warm water current affect the air above it? | The air would be warm and humid. |
| What is a hygrometer? | An instrument that measures humidity. |
| What is humidity? | The amount of water vapor in the air. Air typically feels warmer the more humid it is. |
| What kind of weather occurs with a cold front? | Heavy precipitation, thunderstorms. Cold air. |
| What kind of weather typically occurs with a warm front? | Light drizzle over a long period; warm air. |
| What kind of storm forms over a warm ocean? | Hurricane. |
| Which evaporates faster, cold water or warm water? | Warm - heat accelerates evaporation. |
| During evaporation, liquid water changes to what state? | Gas - water vapor. |
| During condensation, water vapor cools and changes to this state. | Liquid. |
| What state of matter occurs when all heat is removed from water | Solid (ice) |
| What are the four types of precipitation? | Rain, snow, sleet and hail. |
| What is the only type of precipitation that can be blown back up into the cloud and made bigger each time? | Hail. (during a thunderstorm) |
| What do you call the place where two different air masses meet? | A front. |
| How does the jet stream affect weather? | 1. It brings weather systems from the west. 2. It blocks cold air from the north and warm air from the south. |
| The current temperature is 90 degrees. Is this an example of weather or climate? | Weather- it is happening right now. |
| In what type of climate do we live in Massachusetts? | Temperate - cold winters and warm summers. |
| How are weather and climate different? | Weather shows the condition of the atmosphere right now - climate shows the average weather patterns over a 30 year period. |
| In what part of the water cycle does a gas change to a liquid forming a cloud? | Condensation. |
| What is a cloud on the ground called? | Fog. |
| Where would you see more clouds, the desert or at the ocean? why? | At the ocean, because there is more water to evaporate and condense, causing clouds. The desert has little rainfall and so little evaporation. |
| In which direction do storms generally move? | West to east. |
| What does a wind vane show | Wind direction. |
| What does a rain gauge measure? | Rainfall amounts. |
| What instrument measures temperature? | Thermometer. |
