Study questions for weather retake.

QuestionAnswer
What type of weather does a high pressure typically bring? Fair weather, puffy clouds, no precipitation.
What does a barometer measure? Air pressure.
What does an anemometer measure? wind speed.
In what direction does the jet stream flow in the United States? West to East
How would a warm water current affect the air above it? The air would be warm and humid.
What is a hygrometer? An instrument that measures humidity.
What is humidity? The amount of water vapor in the air. Air typically feels warmer the more humid it is.
What kind of weather occurs with a cold front? Heavy precipitation, thunderstorms. Cold air.
What kind of weather typically occurs with a warm front? Light drizzle over a long period; warm air.
What kind of storm forms over a warm ocean? Hurricane.
Which evaporates faster, cold water or warm water? Warm - heat accelerates evaporation.
During evaporation, liquid water changes to what state? Gas - water vapor.
During condensation, water vapor cools and changes to this state. Liquid.
What state of matter occurs when all heat is removed from water Solid (ice)
What are the four types of precipitation? Rain, snow, sleet and hail.
What is the only type of precipitation that can be blown back up into the cloud and made bigger each time? Hail. (during a thunderstorm)
What do you call the place where two different air masses meet? A front.
How does the jet stream affect weather? 1. It brings weather systems from the west. 2. It blocks cold air from the north and warm air from the south.
The current temperature is 90 degrees. Is this an example of weather or climate? Weather- it is happening right now.
In what type of climate do we live in Massachusetts? Temperate - cold winters and warm summers.
How are weather and climate different? Weather shows the condition of the atmosphere right now - climate shows the average weather patterns over a 30 year period.
In what part of the water cycle does a gas change to a liquid forming a cloud? Condensation.
What is a cloud on the ground called? Fog.
Where would you see more clouds, the desert or at the ocean? why? At the ocean, because there is more water to evaporate and condense, causing clouds. The desert has little rainfall and so little evaporation.
In which direction do storms generally move? West to east.
What does a wind vane show Wind direction.
What does a rain gauge measure? Rainfall amounts.
What instrument measures temperature? Thermometer.
