Genetics: Meosis

Based on BIO 150 Chapter 13 Power Points

QuestionAnswer
What is Meiosis? Cell division in sex cells
What are gametes, and where are they present? Sex cells exist in all living things which undergo sexual reproduction
What is the term for gametes in animals? Egg cells and Sperm Cells
What is a zygote? the product of two gametes
What is the main benefit of sexual reproduction? Genetic diversity
Why is the fact that meiosis is somewhat like two mitotic divisions important? It ensures that the zygote obtains the right amount of DNA
What is a homologous chromosome? when each chromosome in the cell has a partner chromosome
Sex cells have a (haploid, diploid) number of chromosomes. How many in humans? Haploid, 23
Body/Somatic cells have a (haploid, diploid) number of chromosomes. How many in humans? Diploid, 46
What is known as the "n" condition? haploid number of chromosomes
What is known as the "2n" condition? diploid number of chromosomes
What are the stages of meiosis? Prophase I, Metaphase I, Anaphase I, Telophase I, Prophase II, Metaphase II, Anaphase II, Telophase II
The following occurs in what stage of Meiosis? Similar to same stage in mitosis, with these differences: Homologous chromosomes pair up and crossing over occurs Prophase I
The following occurs in what stage of Meiosis? Homologous chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell, Each member of the pair start to connect the spindle fibers Metaphase I
The following occurs in what stage of Meiosis? the homologous chromosomes separate from each other, No splitting at the centromere occurs Anaphase I
The following occurs in what stage of Meiosis? Chromatids condense somewhat, followed by a short "resting phase called interkinesis Telophase I
The following occurs in what stage of Meiosis? Very similare to same phase in mitosis but usually a shorter process. sometime it is so subtle it is not noticeable Prophase II
The following occurs in what stage of Meiosis? The chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell, Looks nearly identical to the similarly names mitosis stage, only there are two cells performing the process Metaphase II
The following occurs in what stage of Meiosis? Each sister chromatids seperate in both cells, very similar to its mitotic counterpart Anaphase II
The following occurs in what stage of Meiosis? Same as mitotic counterpart, the nuclei separate in each of the four daughter cells and then cytokinesis occurs shortly after Telophase II

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
