Whats a mineral? a solid consisting of one single element
what is a element? a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances
what is a compound? a compound is a substance that consists of 2 or more elements
What are the 4 main characteristics of a mineral? 1. formed in nature 2. inorganic (not living) 3. Crystalline structure 4. Its a solid
What are the 2 types of minerals? Silicate and non silicate
What are the classes of non-silicate minerals? Native elements, carbonates, halides, oxides, sulfates, and sulfides
What is a native element? minerals made of only one elements example: gold, and silver
Whats is a carbonate? minerals that contain carbon and oxygen in there chemical structure
What are halides? compounds that form when the atoms of fluorine, chlorine, iodine, or bromine combine with sodium potassium, or calcium
What are oxides? Compounds that form when a element chemically combines with oxygen
What is a sulfate? A mineral that contains sulfur and oxygen.
What is a sulfide? Contains one or more elements combined with sulfur
What are minerals physical properties? 1. color 2. luster 3.streak 4. hardness 5. cleavage 6. fracture 7. density 8. Special characteristics
What types of physical characteristics can be in a mineral? 1. Florescence 2.taste 3. chemical reaction 4. radioactivity
What are the types of mining? Surface mining, and Sub-surface mining
Whats reclamation? a process of returning mined land to its original form.
In what ways are minerals formed? Limestone, evaporating salt water, plutons, pegamites, metamorphic rocks, and hot water solutions
