Question | Answer |
---|---|
GONIOMETER | instrument used to measure joint range of motion |
INTRA-ARTICULAR | within the joint |
HYPERURICEMIA | elevated level of uric acid |
MYALGIA | muscle pain |
TOPHUS | deposit of sodium urate crystals under the skin |
HEBERDEN'S NODES | protrusions of the distal interphalangeal finger joints; associated with osteoarthritis |
BOUCHARD'S NODES | enlarged proximal interphalangeal joins of the fingers |
FIBROMYALGIA | chronic musculoskeletal pain disorder |
RHEUMATOID NODULE | granulation of tissue surrounding cores of fibrous debris |
ARTHROPLASTY | plastic repair of a joint |
VASCULITIS | inflammation of blood vessel |
CREPITUS | crackling sound or sensation |
JOINT IMMOBILITY | joint immobility |
DIAGNOSTIC TEST - ERYTHROCYTE SEDIMENTATION RATE (ESR) | results of this test are elevated in any inflammatory process, especially RA |
DIAGNOSTIC TEST - RED BLOOD CELL COUNT (RBC) | detection of blod dyscrasias; differentiation of anemias, leukemia; decreased values in RA & SLE |
DIAGNOSTIC TEST - WHITE BLOOD CELL COUNT (WBC) | increased values with infection; tissue necrosis and inflammation, sometimes decreased values in SLE |
DIAGNOSTIC TEST - RHEUMATOID FACTOR (RF) | determines the presence of antibodies; present in about 80% of persons with RA |
DIAGNOSTIC TEST - CREATININE | assesses renal functions; elevated values in SLE, scleroderma & polyarteritis |
DIAGNOSTIC TEST - C-REACTIVE PROTEIN | positive reading in active inflammation, often positive for RA & SLE |
DIAGNOSTIC TEST - ANTINUCLEAR ANTIBODIES (ANA) | measures presence of antibodies that react with a variety of nuclear antibodies; positive in SLE, RA, scleroderma, Raynaud's disease, Sjogren's syndrome |
DIAGNOSTIC TEST - ARTHROCENTESIS | used to diagnose joint inflammation & infection. Involves aspirating synovial fluid, blood or pus via a needle inserted into a joint cavity. |
DIAGNOSTIC TEST - ARTHOGRAPHY | used in unexplained joint pain or inflammation |
DIAGNOSTIC TEST - ARTHROSCOPY | used to diagnose acute and chronic disorders of the joint |
RADIOLOGIC TESTS - NUCLEAR SCINTIGRAPHY (BONE SCAN) | intravenous radioactive material that is taken up by bone is injected for visualization of entire skeletal system; procedure detects malignancies, osteoperosis, osteomyelitis & some fractures |
RADIOLOGIC TESTS - RADIOGRAPHY | determines density, texture & alignment of bones; assesses soft tissue involvement |
RADIOLOGIC TESTS - COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT SCAN) | scans the soft tissues & bones by use of both radiographs and computers; determines presence of tumors and some spinal fractures |
RADIOLOGIC TESTS - MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI) | examines soft tissue joint structures; performed most commonly on shoulder or knee when a traumatic injury is suspected & determines presence of bone chips, torn ligaments, or other loose bodies |
RADIOLOGIC TESTS - DISKOGRAPHY | contrast medium injected directly into vertebral disk being examined |
RADIOLOGIC TESTS - ULTRASOUND | soft tissue visualization produced by sound waves |
RADIOLOGIC TESTS - PET | a noninvasive procedure that makes use of magnetic energy sources to view soft tissue |
