What is anxiety? the apprehensive anticipation of future danger or misfortune accompanied by a feeling of dysphoria or somatic symptoms of tension - it's a UNIVERSAL EMOTION
We have all felt anxious at one time or another but it becomes a disorder when it interferes with... NORMAL DAILY FUNCTIONING
General comments about anxiety: _____________ performance at mild levels, ________________ performance at high levels. INCREASES performance at mild levels, DECREASES performance at high levels.
What is the nurse's role in treatment of anxiety? Client's may not need the nurse's presence in mild anxiety; however, the nurse should stay with a highly anxious client. the client who is highly anxious needs step-by-step instruction (nothing complex - can't make decisions).
What is GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER? Chronic anxiety; an anxiety disorder in which an individual feels anxious & worried most of the time. This person lives with it DAILY.
What are s/s of generalized anxiety disorder? Fatigued due to constant anxiety & muscle tension; restlessness; apprehension; irritability; uncomfortable
How is generalized anxiety disorder treated? 1)short-term use of anxiolytics 2)relaxation techniques: deep breathing, imagery, deep muscle relaxation 3)reduce pressure & anxiety-provoking situations around client 4)journaling over time to gain insight into anxiety, peaks & valleys, triggers
