Parenteral Nutrition

Intravenous Through a vein
Constituents of IV feeding solutions Contain 2.5% of amino acids, 6.25% of dextrose, 20% of fatty acids & all vits and minerals except vit k
Simple IV Solution Only contain water, dextrose, and electrolytes
NS Normal saline, 0.9% NaCl
D#W D: Dextrose, #: percent of dextrose, W: water
TPN Totally parenteral nutrition, 2500 cal/day, best suited for 2 wks or less
Respiratory Acidosis Low blood pH b/c improper lung function, can be worsen by glucose oxidation
Phlebitis Inflammation of vein
Cyclic Infusion Periodic administration of IV feedings, allows insulin to rise and fall like normal
