Photosynthesis study guide for BSC2010

QuestionAnswer
Photosynthesis The process that converts solar energy into chemical energy.
Photoautotrophs Self-feeders that use light as a source of energy to synthesize organic compounds.
Heterotrophs Consumers who live on compounds produced by other organisms.
Chloroplasts Where photosynthesis takes place, present in all green tissue of a plant but are particularly abundant and active in the mesophyll cells of the leaf.
Thylakoids Membrane bound compartment in the chloroplast.
Stroma Where the carbohydrate formation reactions occur in the chloroplasts of plant cells undergoing photosynthesis,found between the stacks of thylakoids.
Stomata Where the carbohydrate formation reactions occur in the chloroplasts of plant cells undergoing photosynthesis. Allows carbon dioxide to enter and water to exit.
The Photosynthesis Cycle Light reactions on the thylakoid membranes splitting water and creating H+ which is used to make ATP and reduced NADPH. This then enters the calvin cycle in the stroma where energy in ATP and NADPH is used to synthesize sugar from carbon dioxide.
