| chemical digestion | breaking down of food into components by using enzymes |
| nutrients | organic compounds found in food necessary for living things to survive |
| vitamins | enzyme helpers found in food |
| minerals | essential elements needed by the body found in food |
| peristalsis | muscular contractions that help food move through the digestive tract |
| amylase | an enzyme found in the mouth that breaks down starch |
| bile | made by the liver and stored in the gall bladder, it emulsifies fats |
| protease | digestive enzyme that will break down proteins into amino acids |
| lipase | digestive enzyme that will break down fats into fatty acids and glycerol |
| villi | microscopic structures which increase the surface area for absorption in the small intestine |
