 Crossing Over: The process by which a portion of one chromosome is exchanged with a portion of another chromosome.
 Vertical Gene Transfer: Transfer of genes from an organism or cell to its offspring.
 Horizontal Gene Transfer: Transfer of genes between two organisms in the same generation.
o What is the difference between a plasmid and a transposon? PT1  plasmids differ from bacterial chromosomes in that the genes they carry are usually not essential for the growth of the cell under normal conditions.
o What is the difference between a plasmid and a transposon? PT2  plasmids are self-replicating, gene-containing circular pieces of DNA about 1- 5% the size of the bacterial chromosome  Transposons are small segments of DNA that can move (be "transposed") from one region of a DNA molecule to another.
