• Mutation

QuestionAnswer
o Define mutation.  A mutation is a change in the base sequence of DNA.
Describe Base substitution mutations. The replacement of a single base in DNA by another base, causing a mutation; also called point mutation.
Describe Missense mutations. A mutation that results in the substitution of an amino acid in a protein.
Describe Nonsense mutations. A base substitution in DNA that results in a nonsense codon.
Describe Frameshift mutations. A mutation caused by the additinn or deletion of one or mure bases in DNA.
o What is a mutagen?  An agent in the environment that brings about mutations.
 Provide examples of mutagens. • 1. Frameshift mutagen • 2. Nucleoside analog • 3. Base-pair mutagen • 4. Ionizing radiation • 5. Nonionizing radiation
