Antibiotics in Pharmacology
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Antibiotics | drugs that have the capability to kill microorganisms that invade the human body |
| Classification of antibiotics | narrow spectrum (effective against a small number of microorganisms) and broad spectrum (effective against a large number of microorganisms) |
| Classification by MOA | bacteriostatic (agents inhibit bacterial growth) and bactericidal (agents cause death and paralysis of microbes) |
| Most common adverse reaction | allergic reaction (itch, rash, hive, and possibly anaphylaxis) |
| Advise clients to: | a) finish all the medication b) take medications at evenly spaced intervals c) take missed dose as soon as remembered, but not at the same time as the next one |
| Cephalosporins | chemical modification of penicillin, effective against rapidly growing bacteria |
| Cephalosporing MOA | a) inhibit cell wall synthesis, b) and cell division and growth |
| First generation cephalosporins (mainly start with “cef” “ceph”) | Cefazolin (Ancef; Kefzol), Cephalexin (Keflex), Cefadroxil (Duricef) |
| First generation cephalosporins USE | surgical prophylaxis and preferred for most gram-positive organism infections |
| Second generation cephalosporins USE | wider range of antimicrobial effect than first generation; TREATS gram-negative and anaerobic bacteria |
