cellular structure and function

QuestionAnswer
Nucleus holds DNA & controls activities of the cell.
Cell Membrane seperates cell from surroundings; regulates what leaves and enters; supports and protects cell. also called cell envelope, plasma membrane, lipid bilayer.
Nuclear Membrane(nuclear envelope) protects the nucleus. Double layer membrane surrounding the nucleus. Porous to allow communication to the rest of cell.
Nucleolus makes ribosomes. Found in the nucleus. Made up of RNA and proteins.
Cytoplasm Area between the cell membrane and the nucleus. Contains important organelles.
Mitochondria Powerhouse of the cell. Site where respiration(breaking down of food to produce energy)takes place.
Chloroplast traps energy from the sunlight.Site for photosynthesis. Found only in plants cells.
Ribosome make proteins. Composed of RNA and proteins.
Lysosome membrane bound structure containing enzymes to digest certain materials in the cell
Rough Endolasmic Reticulum transports materials through the inside of the cell; proteins are synthesized (made) here.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum transports materials through the inside of the cell.Has no ribosomes.
Golgi Body/ Apparatus flattened sac of membranes, modifies proteins by adding carbohydrates and lipids to them. Also stores protein.
Vacuole stores materials like water, salt, proteins,& carbs
Cell Theory 1.all living things are composed of cells 2. cells are the basic units of the structure of l iving things. 3. All cells come from pre-exi sting cells.
prokaryote Cell that lacks internal structures surrounded by membranes. Example: bacteria(no nucleus or other membrane bound organelles).
eukaryotic cell Contains a nucleus and other organelles. ex. plant cells, animal cells, protists, fungi.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
