CH 10. CH TEST!

Getting ready for the chapter test.

QuestionAnswer
The brain and the spinal cord are called the Central nervous system (CNS)
Nervers all over the body outside the CNS are called the Peripheral nervous system (PNS)
To the brain comes from receptors all over the body at both the conscious and subconcious levels. Sensory input
Includes 12 pairs of cranial nerves originating from the brain and 31 pairs of spinal nerves originating from the spinal cord. Peripheral nervous system.(PNS)
(afferent nerves) carry messages away from the brain from sense organs. Sensory division
(efferent nerves) carry messages away from the brain and spinal cord to muscles and organs. Motor division
Autonomic nervous system (ANS0 It carries signals to glands and to cardiac and smooth muscle. It has two subdivisions. sympathetic, parasympathetic, somatic motor.
Sympathetic division Arouses the body for action. increasing the heart, inhibits digestion.
Parasympathetic division Calms the body, slowing down the heartbeat but stimulating digestion.
Somatic motor division Carries signals to the skeletal muscles and is under voluntary control.
Neurons (nerve cells) recieve stimuli ans transmit impulses to other neurons or to receptors in other organs.
Axons and dendrites Each neuron consists of a cell body and two types of processes or extensions.
Dendrites Are short , highly branched extensions of the neuron's cell body. They conduct impulses toward the cell body. The more dentries a neuron has, the more impulses it can recieve from other neurons.
(ex: neurotransmitter) Acetycholine Stimu;ates muscle celss to contract.
(ex: neurotransmitter) Norepinephrine Found in many areas of the brain and spinal cord; has a stimulatory effect that increased by cocaine and amphetamines.
(ex: neurotransmitter) Serotonin Found in many areas of the brain ans spinal cord; involved with mood, anxiety, and sleep.
(ex: neurotransmitter) Dopamine Confined to small areas of the brain; its absence is associated with Parkinson disease.
(ex: neurotransmitter) Endorphins Found in areas around the brainstem; are the bodys natural pain relievers.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
