Cellular Organelles

Function of Cell Parts

QuestionAnswer
The cell part that controls what enters and leaves the cell. Cell Membrane (aka plasma membrane)
The control center of the cell. Nucleus
synthesizes ribosome parts Nucleolus
synthesizes proteins by bonding together amino acids Ribosomes
Releases energy in organic molecules and then uses that energy to produce ATP. Mitochondria
Transforms the sun's energy into the chemical energy of organic molecules (specifically glucose). Chloroplast
Finishes the synthesis of secretory proteins and then transports them via vesicles to the Golgi body Rough endoplasmic reticulum
synthesizes lipids and detoxifies alcohol Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Digests wastes. Lysosome
Help move chromosomes during cell division. Centrioles
Gives shape and support to plant and bacterial cells. Cell wall
A gel like substance that includes everything from the outside of the nucleus to the cell membrane. Cytoplasm
Stores water and chemicals. These are very large in plant cells. Vacuole
Cells without membrane bound organelles. Prokaryotes
Cells with membrane bound organelles. Eukaryotes
Finishes, sorts and ships chemcials to locations through the cell or out of the cell. Golgi body
Surrounds the nucleus and controls what enters and leaves it nuclear envelope
Breaks down peroxide which is a waste product of many chemical reactions that occur in the cell peroxisome
central vacuole stores water in plant cells; helps maintain turgor pressure
network of protein fibers that functions in structural support and motility cytoskeleton
What three cell parts do prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells both contain? plasma membrane, chromosomes, ribosomes
What two cell parts are found in animal cells that are not in found in plant cells? lysosomes, centrioles
What three cell parts are found in plant cells that are not found in animal cells? cell wall, central vacuole, chloroplasts
The presence of organelles in eukaryotic cells enables them to be larger than prokaryotic cells because the chemicals needed are contained within the small space of each organelle and have a high chance of reacting
the gel-like material extending from the cell membrane to the nuclear envelope is called the cytoplasm
propels a cell by an undulating whip-like motion flagella
strong fibers located just outside the plasma membrane that support and protect the plasma membrane extracellular matrix
moves materials through the cell along the cytoskeleton using motor proteins transport vesicles

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
