Photosynthesis

Based on BIO 150 Chapter 10 Power Point

QuestionAnswer
What is Photosynthesis? Incredible Biochemical Pathway; It is the process in which a cell can make glucose using the light energy from the Sun
What type of organisms perform photosynthesis? Green plants, green algae and some bacteria
What colors make up the visible light spectrum? Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo and Violet
Visiable light as we know it represents only a small part of the... Electromagnetic Spectrum
What are photons? Light as a Particle
Does Light behave as a particle or wave? Both
What affect does light have on electrons? Light photons excite electrons found in the atoms of molecules. The energized electrons can be accepted by an electron acceptor.
What drives the process of photosynthesis? excited electrons
What is chlorophyll? The pigment inside of the chloroplasts thykaloids. Chlorophyll a and b exist in the cell
What color(s) spectrum does chlorophyll absorb? Red and Blue
What color(s) spectrum does the chlorophyll reflect? Green
What are Carotenoids? Additional pigments that exist that absorb different wavelengths of light (makes photosynthesis more efficient)
In Chlorophyll A or B? CHO chlorophyll b
In Chlorophyll A or B? CH3 chlorophyll a
What is the role of the Porphyrin Ring? It Absorbs light
When looking at the chemical structure of chlorophyll, what is the long chain called? Hydrocarbon Side Chain
Name the three light dependent reactions in their order of occurance. Photosystem II and Photosystem I Chemiosmosis
Name the light independent reaction Calvin Cycle (Carbon fixation reactions)
Name this reaction: Absorbs light at 680 nm; Water splits – causing a supply of electrons; Oxygen is produced as a by-product; Electrons move down the electron transport chain; ATP produced by chemiosmosis; Electrons transferred to photosystem I Photosystem II
Name this reaction: Electrons are received from photosystem II and energized by light energy; Electrons move down another electron transport chain; Final electron acceptor is NADP+ (NADP+ -> NADPH) Photosystem I
Name this reaction: The production of ATP during photosynthesis; Protons accumulate in the chloroplast; Protons are pumped out into the cytosol and that powers the production of ATP; The enzyme ATP synthase produces ATP from ADP and Pi Chemiosmosis
Name this reaction: It is light independent, 13 reactions in three phases (Carbon dioxide uptake; Carbon reduction; RuBP regeneration) The Calvin Cycle
What is unique about C4 Plants? It Produces oxaloacetate in preparation of the Calvin Cycle. Also the Calvin Cycle occurs in a different part of the plant leaf
What is unique about CAM plants? They consist of many desert plants; Produce malate and stores it in the vacuoles;Initial fixation of carbon dioxide occurs at night
What is Mesophyll? the photosynthetic tissue of the leaf
What are Thylakoids? disks in chloroplasts
What are Granums? Stacks of thykaloids
What is the Stroma? the inside portion of the chloroplasts
What is the Stomata? The opening where the plant breathes
What is the formula for photosynthesis? 6CO2 + 6H2O -light&energy-> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What is the Final electron acceptor of Photosynthesis? NADP+
What is the name of the enzyme that catalyzes the calvin cycle (it is the most prevalent protein on earth)? Rubisco
