Nose, Mouth, and Throat

| Stensen's duct | Opening of the parotid salivary gland; looks like a small dimple by upper second molar |
| Leukoedema | A benign grayish opaque area, more common in blacks and East Indians, unknown cause |
| Fordyce's granules | Small, isolated white or yellow papules on the mucosa of cheek, tongue and lips |
| Tonsils grading scale | 1+ Visible; 2+ Halfway b/w pillars n uvula; 3+ Touching uvula; 4+ Touching each other |
| Sucking Tubercle | A small pad in the middle of the upper lip from friction of breast/bottle feeding |
| Epstein Pearls | Small, whitish, glistening, pearly papules on hard palate n gums, look like teeth |
| Bednar aphthae | Traumatic areas or ulcers on hard palate, results from abrasions while sucking |
| Epistaxis | Nosebleed, cause- nose picking, forceful cough or sneeze, rhinitis, heavy exertion |
| Furuncle | Small boil, appear red and swollen, very painful |
| Sinusitis | Facial pain, after upper respiratory infection; fever, chills, malaise |
| Cleft Lip | Most common congenital deformity; early treat- preserves speech and swallowing |
| Herpes Simplex 1 | Cold sores- group of clear vesicles, very contagious, heal in 4-10 days, very common |
| Malocclusion | Upper or lower dental arches are not aligned |
| Gingivitis | Gums are red, swollen, and bleed easily; due to poor dental hygiene or vit C def. |
| Koplik's Spots | Small blue-white spots w/ irregular red halo on mucosa, early sign of measles |
| Leukoplakia | Chalky white, thick, raised patch w/ well defined border; w/ heavy smoking or alcohol use |
| Candidiasis | Thrush; white, cheesy, curdlike patch on tongue, occurs w/ antibiotics, corticosteroids |
| Ankyloglossia | Tongue-tie; short lingual frenulum, fix tongue tip to floor of mouth, congenital defect |
| Fissured or Scrotal Tongue | Deep furrows divide papilae into irregular rows, occurs w/ down syndrome n dehydration |
| Geographic Tongue (Migratory Glossitis) | Pattern of normal coating mixed w/ bright red, shiny, circular area w/ raised borders |
| Atrophic Glossitis | Smooth, glossy tongue; occurs w/ Vit B12 def., folic acid def., iron def. anemia |
| Black Hairy Tongue | Elongation of filiform papillae and painless overgrowth of mycelial threads, w/ antibiotics |
| Macroglossia | Enlarged tongue, may protrude mouth, occurs with down syndrome, cretinism, myxedema |
| Cleft Palate | Congenital defect, fusion failure of maxillary processes, wide variation in extent formation |
| Bifid Uvula | Partly severed uvula, may indicate a submucous cleft palate, may affect speech, Amer.Indians |
