Section 1.2 lesson A

Cell compounds- Water, Acids, Bases, and Buffers

QuestionAnswer
What is an acid? Acids are molecules that dissociate in water, releasing hydrogen ions. An acidic solution has a ph below 7. Some acidic solutions include Lemon juice, vinegar, tomato juice, and coffee.
What is a base? Bases are molecules that either take up hydorgen ions or release hydroxide ions. Bases have a ph of above 7. Some of these include Milk of magnesia and ammonia.
What is a buffer? A buffer is a chemical or a combination of chemicals that keeps pH within normal limits. Buffers resist pH changes because they take up excess hydrogen ions or hydroxide ions.
What is hemoglobin? Hemoglobin is iron-containing pigment in red blood cells that combines with and transports oxygen.
What is hydrogen bonding? Hydrogen bonding is a weak bond that arises between a slightly positive hydrogen atom of one molecule and a slightly negative atom of another molecule or between parts of the same molecule.
What is hydrophilic? Hydrophilic is a type of molecule that interacts with water by dissolving in water and/or forming hydrogen bonds with water molecules.
What is hydrophobic? Hydrophobic is a type of molecule that does not interact with water because it is non-polar.
What is a lubricant? A lubricant such as water is a good medium because it flows freely making it good for transporting dissolved and suspended particles and is a lubricant in sites where our body surfaces interact with the dry enviroment we live in.
What is pH? The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. It is used to indicate the acidity or basicity of a solution. Acids have a pH of below 7, bases have a pH above 7 and a pH of 7 is neutral.
What is polarity? Polarity is a distinction between negative and positive electric charges. The polarity of water molecules allows hydrogen bonds to form between molecules.
What is a solvent? A solvent is a fluid, such as water, that dissolves the solutes.
What is a temperature regulator? Water is a temperature regulator because it protects us and other organisms from rapid temperature changes and helps us maintain our normal internal temperature. It also allows bodies of water such as oceans to maintain a relatively constant temperature.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
