Heparin

Type Unfractionated Heparin anticoagulant
Presentation Ampoule – 1 ml with 5000u Heparin
Actions 1. Inhibits blood clotting 2. Combines with antithrombin IIIa naturally occurring anti-clotting factor in plasma, and inhibits conversion of prothrombintothrombin 3.interferes with the actions of other clotting factors and with fibrin stabilising factor
Use Patients with an acute ST elevation myocardial infarction who meet the requirements for early percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)
Adv effects 1. Bleeding 2. Anaphylactoid reactions (rare) 3. Thrombocytopenia
Contraindications Use PCI checklist
Precautions Use with care in patients with extensive history of allergies
Dose Adults: 5000u IV, over 30 – 60 seconds
Spec note This treatment should not delay transport time to hospital
