| element | One type of atom; cannot be broken down by ordinary chemical means. |
| compound | Substance made of atoms of different elements bonded together in a certain ratio like H-2-O (water) or C-O-2 (carbondioxide). |
| ion | An atom that has gained or lost one or more electrons. |
| ionic bond | Forms through electrical force between oppositely charges ions (+-). |
| covalent bond | Forms when atoms share a pair of electrons. |
| molecule | Two (2) or more atoms held together by covalent bonds. |
| atom | Consists of 3 types of smaller particles: protons, neutrons, electrons. |
| hydrogen bond | Attration between a slightly negative (-) and positive (+) atom (oftem oxygen or nitrogen). |
| cohesion | Attraction among molecules of a substance. |
| adhesion | Attraction among molecules of different substances. |
| solution | Mixture of substances that is the same throughout. |
| solvent | Substance present in great amount and that dissolves another substance. |
| solute | The substance that is dissolved in a solvent. |
| acid | Compound that releases a proton (H+) when it dissolves in water. |
| base | Compound that removes protons (H+) from a solution. |
| PH | The acidity of a solution (or concentration of ions (H+). |
