QuestionAnswer
NUCLEUS structure that contains DNA and controls the cells activities
CHLOROPLAST found in plant cells, it captures energy from the sun and converts it to chemical energy
MITOCHONDRIA converts food's chemical energy into compounds cells can use
LYSOSOME filled with enzymes needed to break down certain materials in the cell
RIBOSOMES site where proteins are assembled
GOLGI APPARATUS modifies, sorts, and packages proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum
ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM where lipids are assembled and some proteins are modified
CELL WALL found only in plant cells, a rigid boundary giving support and strength
CELL MEMBRANE made of lipids and proteins, regulates what enters and leaves the cell
PROKARYOTIC CELL has no nucleus, is associated with living things, and is simple
EUKARYOTIC CELL has a nucleus, is a single cell organism and is complex
PLANT CELL a cell wall, central vacuoles, and chloroplast
ANIMAL CELL has no cell wall, but has centrials which a plant cell doesn't have.
CELL THEORY -all living things are composed of cells -cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things -new cells are produced from existing cells
DIFFUSION the movement of particles from an area where they are more concentrated to an area where the are less concentrated.
FACILITATED DIFFUSION movement of specific molecules across cell membranes through protein channels
OSMOSIS the diffusion of water through a permeable membrane
HYPERTONIC when comparing two solutions, the solution with the greater concentration of solutes
HYPOTONIC when comparing two solutions, the solution with the lesser concentration of solutes
ACTIVE TRANSPORT energy-requiring process that moves material across a cell membrane against a concentrated difference
PASSIVE TRANSPORT the movement of materials across a semi-permeable membrane, with the concentration gradient
EQUILIBRIUM when the concentration of a solute is the same throughout a solution
ORGANELLE specialized structure that performs important cell functions
MULTI CELLULAR ORGANISM cells though out a organism can develop in different ways to perform different tasks
CELL MEMBRANE made up of lipid bilayer and proteins, regulates what enters and leaves the cell.
FLUID MOSAIC MODEL molecules that are so plentiful and different in the cell membrane that scientist gave this name
PROTEIN PUMP protein channels and pumps that help to move material across the cell membrane

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
