Nature of Science

| observation | that which can be seen, measured or discerned |
| inference | conclusion based on observation, reasoning and knowledge |
| hypothesis | proposed explanantion that can be tested by experimentation |
| theory | explanation thought to be true through repeated testing |
| law | phenomenon that occurs the same way every time it is tested under the same conditions |
| fact | phenomenon that can not be proven false with more testing |
| ethics | moral values |
| bias | personal opinion |
| science | observing and studying the world around us to gain knowledge |
| technology | applicaton of science knowledge |
| independent variable | Factor in an experiment that is changed by the experimenter and it in turn causes a change in our results |
| dependent variable | Factor in an experiment that responds to changes and is measured. It changes as a result of our investigation |
| constant variable | Factor in an experiment that remains the same |
| control | standard to compare against |
| identify the problem | considered to be the first step in problem solving scientifc methods |
| conclusion | inferences drawn from data and observations |
| Hypothesis | A prediction that can be tested. Often written as an "if...then..."statement |
