Patterns of Circulation in the atmosphere

QuestionAnswer
Coriolis effect the effect of Earth rotation on the direction of winds and currents
climate the average annual condition of temperature, precipitation, winds, and clouds in an area
moderate is to make something become less extreme or severe
Three ways heat is transferred to the Earth's Surface convection, conduction and radiation
uneven heating because of the Earth's surface is curved, it is heated unevenly by solar energy. Near the equator, more solar energy strikes a area of Earths surface than near the poles(North & South)
Why does the sun not heat the Earth's atmosphere and surface evenly this is due to the earth's tilt , is spherical shape and uneven distribution of land & water
heat is transferred from the sun as electromagnetic waves or radiation
Wind The horizontal movement of air from high pressure to an area of low pressure
local wind air that blows short distances
global winds occur over a much larger area
doldrums are a calm area at the equator where air warmed by the sun rises into the atmosphere
Horse Latitudes are two calm areas north and south of the equator where cooler air stops moving toward the poles and sinks
Polar easterlies blow cold air away from the poles as air sinks at the poles and flows back to the lowered latitudes
prevailing westerlies blow from west to east and away from the house latitudes
Trade winds blow from the horse Latitudes to the coldest
weather refers to the conditions in the atmosphere at a specific time and place
Climate Regions (Earth's climates are classified into five major -types of regions -POLAR -CONTINENTAL -DRY -TEMPERATE -TROPICAL
conduction The transfer of heat from a warmer object or material to a cooler one through direct contact(ex. The sun heats the ground, and the warm ground transfers heat to rocks or other objects touching it (direct contact)
convection Transfer of heat by the movement of warmer and coolermaterials (heat transfers through movement) Remember WarmAirRises CoolAir Sinks. Think warm day earth is hot , the ocean is cool . The cool air from ocean moves into replace warm air creating seabreez
radiation Heat transfers through electromagnetic waves
