Periodic Table & Chemical Reactions

TermDefinition
Periodic Table of Elements an organized table of all the chemical elements in order of increasing atomic number
Physical Property properties of matter that can be observed, measured, or changed without changing the matter itself
Rare Earth Elements a group of similar metals that are hard to find in pure form and are located in the middle of the periodic table
Atoms the smallest unit of each element
Brittle a material that easily breaks, cracks, or snaps
Ductility can be made into wires, pulled, or stretched without breaking
Dull not shiny
Element a pure substance composed of the same type of atom throughout
Luster gentle shining light that is reflected from a surface, shiny
Malleability a physical property of an object allowing it to be reshaped with bending or cracking
Metal(s) elements that are mostly solids at room temperature, have luster, and are good conductors of heat and electricity
Metalloid elements whose physical properties are intermediate between metals and nonmetals
Molecule a group of two or more atoms bonded together
Nonmetal elements that are mostly liquids and gases at room temperature and bad conductors of heat and electricity
Conductivity ability of a substance to transfer heat or electrical energy
Chemical change a type of change that forms a new substance
Chemical properties characteristics of substances that are changing their chemical identity
Chemical reactions a process where one or more substances change into entirely new substances
Corrosion the natural, gradual breakdown of materials-usually metals-through chemical or electrochemical reactions with their environment
Precipitate a solid that forms when two liquids are mixed
Thermal energy heat energy
Tarnishing a thin layer of chemical corrosion that discolors or dulls the outer surface of a metal
Evidence of a Chemical Change Precipitate, Gas production, Color change, Smoke/fire, Temperature change

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
