| Flipped | to make the left and right side of the image appear switched |
| Inverted | to make an image appear upside down |
| Magnified | to make an object appear larger |
| Stage Clips | hold the slide in place on the stage |
| Aperture | opening in the center of the stage that allows light to pass through |
| Stage | platform for the slide to rest; an opening in its center allows light to pass through |
| Diaphragm | circular disk below the stage that controls how much light passes through |
| Light | shines parallel rays into the microscope |
| Nosepiece | holds the objective lenses and can be rotated to change the objective |
| Arm | holds the tube and objective lenses; connects to the base of the microscope |
| Base | holds up the entire microscope |
| fine adjustment knob | moves the stage up and down slightly |
| coarse adjustment knob | moves the stage up and down in large motions |
| high power objective | the middle length objective lens |
| low power objective | the shortest objective lens |
| tube | gives the needed distance between the eyepiece and the objective lenses |
| Eye piece | lens closest to the eye |
| resolution | the ability to clearly distinguish the individual parts |
| field of view | the part of the specimen you can see |
| specimen | what is being observed or viewed |
| electron microscope | a microscope that uses beams of electrons to produce a magnified image |
| microscope | an instrument (tool) that makes objects appear larger |
