Airway Key Terms

Airway Key Terms- Quiz 9

TermDefinition
Ventilation The mechanical movement of air into and out of the lungs. Ventilation allows oxygen to enter the lungs and carbon dioxide to be removed.
Respiration The process of exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide. It includes external respiration (between the lungs and blood) and internal respiration (between the blood and body cells).
Hypoxia A condition in which body tissues do not receive enough oxygen to function properly. Signs may include restlessness, confusion, cyanosis, and altered mental status.
Apnea The complete absence of breathing. Apneic patients require immediate airway management and positive-pressure ventilation.
OPA (Oropharyngeal Airway) An airway adjunct inserted into the mouth to keep the tongue from blocking the airway in an unresponsive patient without a gag reflex.
NPA (Nasopharyngeal Airway) An airway adjunct inserted through the nose to help maintain an open airway in patients with an intact gag reflex or who cannot tolerate an OPA
BVM (Bag-Valve Mask) A handheld device used to provide positive-pressure ventilations to patients who are not breathing adequately or are apneic.
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) A noninvasive ventilation device that delivers continuous positive airway pressure to help improve oxygenation and reduce the work of breathing in patients who are breathing on their own.
Pulse Oximetry A noninvasive method of measuring the percentage of hemoglobin saturated with oxygen (SpO₂) using a sensor placed on a finger, toe, or earlobe.
Preoxygenation The administration of high-concentration oxygen before airway procedures or assisted ventilation to increase the body's oxygen reserve and reduce the risk of hypoxia.
Tracheostomy A surgically created opening in the trachea through the neck that provides a direct airway for breathing or mechanical ventilation.
Hypoxemia is an abnormally low level of oxygen in the arterial blood

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
