QuestionAnswer
empirical evidence empirical evidence, information gathered directly or indirectly through observation or experimentation that may be used to confirm or dis-confirm a scientific theory or to help justify, or establish as reasonable, a person's belief in a given proposition.
theory A theory is a carefully thought-out explanation for observations of the natural world that has been constructed using the scientific method, and which brings together many facts and hypotheses.
law A scientific law is a statement describing an observable occurrence in nature that consistently appears to be true.
experiment An experiment is a procedure carried out to support or refute a hypothesis, or determine the efficacy or likelihood of something previously untried.
hypothesis a testable, tentative, and reasoned (but unproven) explanation for a problem or observed phenomenon based on partial evidence.
dependent variable A dependent variable is what you measure in the experiment and what is affected during the experiment.
observation An observation is the use of one of the senses (hearing, sight, touch, etc.) or measurement to gather information.
independent variable An independent variable is the variable you have control over, what you can choose and manipulate.
data Scientific Data means information which is based on research carried out by scientists and which has been published in a peer-reviewed journal.
model A scientific model is where scientists represent something in the real world in a way that makes it easier to understand, or make predictions.
engineering Engineers apply scientific principles to analyze, design, invent, code, build, and create to solve all sorts of problems and make the world a better place.
technology The definition of technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes or applications.
Prototype an original model on which something is patterned
trade-off Trade-off simply means finding a compromise between two incompatible qualities.
life cycle analysis A life cycle is a series of changes that an organism will go through throughout its life, marked by significant stages starting with fertilization and ending with death.
pugh chart A Pugh chart is a method used to analyze different ideas and to determine the optimal choice.
risk-benefit analysis Risk-benefit analysis enables organizations to identify potential adverse outcomes and weigh them against the expected benefits of a decision.
