TermDefinition
earth system its a group of connected parts of the earth that interact with one another
geosphere the solid part of earth including rocks, soil, and land
hydrosphere all the water on earth, including ocean, river, lakes, and groundwater.
cryosphere its the frozen water on earth including glaciers, ice sheets, snow, and sea ice.
atmosphere the layer of gases surrounding the earth.
biosphere its the part of the earth where living organisms exist.
energy budget the balance between the energy earth receives from the sun and the energy it releases back into space.
air pressure its the force that the weight of air exerts on earths surface.
thermosphere the layer of earths atmosphere with very high temperatures.
mesosphere its the layer of earths atmosphere above the stratosphere where most meteors burn up.
stratosphere its the layer of earths atmosphere above the troposphere that contains the ozone layer.
troposphere the lowest layer of earths atmosphere where we live and where most weather occurs.
ozone layer its the gas made of three oxygen atoms that help protect the earth from UV radiation
greenhouse effect the process where gases in earths atmosphere trap heat from the sun keeping earth warm.
temperature its the measurement of how hot or cold something is.
thermal energy the total energy of the particles in a substance due to their motion.
thermal expansion its the increase in size of a substance when its temperature increases
heat the transfer of thermal energy from a warmer object to a cooler object.
radiation its the transfer of energy from one place to another through waves or particles.
convection the transfer of heat through the movement of a liquid or gas.
conduction its the transfer of heat through direct contact between objects or particles.
wind the movement of air from one place to another.
Coriolis effect its the apparent deflection of moving air or water caused by earth rotation.
global wind the large patterns of air movement around earth caused by difference in heating and earths rotation.
jet stream its a narrow band of very strong winds high in the atmosphere that moves from west to east.
local wind the winds that blow over a small area and is caused by local differences in temperature and air pressure.
ocean current its a continuous movement of ocean water in a particular direction.
surface current the movement of ocean water near the surface mainly caused by wind.
deep current its the movement of deep ocean water caused mainly byndifferences in water temperature.
convection current the circular movement of a fluid caused by warm material rising and cool material sinking.
Upwelling its the movement of cold nutrient water from deep in the ocean up toward the surface.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
