Unit 10
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Earth System | All of the matter, energy, and processing within Earth's boundary. |
| Geosphere | The mostly solid, rocky part of the Earth. |
| Hydosphere | The part of Earth that is liquid water. |
| Cryosphere | The part of Earth that is made up of all of the frozen water on Earth. |
| Atmosphere | The part of Earth that is mostly made of invisible gases that surround Earth. |
| Biosphere | The part of Earth is made up of living things and the areas of Earth where they are found. |
| Energy Budget | A way to keep track of energy transfers into and out of the Earth system. |
| Air pressure | The measure of the force with which air molecules push on an area of surface. |
| Thermosphere | The uppermost layer of the atmosphere. |
| Mesosphere | Something between the thermosphere and stratosphere. |
| Stratosphere | Something between the mesosphere and troposphere. |
| Troposphere | The lowest layer of the atmosphere. |
| Ozone Layer | An area in the stratosphere, |
| Greenhouse Affect | The process which gases in the atmosphere, such as water vapor and carbon dioxide, absorb and give of infrared radiation. |
| Temperature | A measure of the average kinetic energy of particles. |
| Thermal Energy | The kinetic energy of particles. |
| Thermal Expansion | The increase in volume that results from an increase in temperature. |
| Heat | The energy that is transferred between objects that are at different temperatures. |
| Radiation | The transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves. |
| Convection | The transfer of energy due to the movement of matter. |
| Conduction | The transfer of energy from one object to another object through direct contact. |
| Wind | The movement of air caused by differences in air pressure. |
| Coriolis Effect | This effect is most noticeable over long distances. |
| Global Winds | This occurs at or near Earth's surface. |
| Jet Stream | Narrow belts of high speed winds that blow from west to east between seven kilometers and sixteen kilometers above Earth's surface. |
| Local Winds | The movement of air over short distances. |
| Ocean currants | They contain streamlike movement of water. |
