Science Vocabulary 1

TermDefinition
Science Investigating and exploring natural events. (Using questions, models, investigations, observations, data, etc.) Information, facts, data learned during investigations and explorations
Phenomena Observable events in the natural world. Can explore and learn about it using science.
Input Information, material, or energy that enters a system.
Output Information, material, or energy that exits a system.
Process The changing of the input to achieve a goal.
Model Something that represents phenomena, processes, or systems. Can be a chart, diagram, picture, graph, 3D structure, computer simulation, etc. Criteria: titles, labels, drawn clearly, explanation(s)
Model Criteria Title (At the top). Labels (Underlined for all parts, arrows touching). Explanations of job for each part ( under label). Drawn clearly
Observation Facts, evidence, or information that you gather with your 5 senses (See, hear, touch, taste, or smell) or measure (ruler, thermometer, etc.)
Inference What you think happened based on facts or observations. A possible explanation or logical conclusion that is based on observations (Based on evidence)
Investigation The exploration/experiment/research you do to study your inference.
Data The information and observations you collect during the investigation (dates, times, numbers, weights, color, distance, speed, etc.)
Evidence The relevant data (and patterns in data) that support the claim you are making
System A set of connected items working together to form a whole OR A combination of parts working together to form a more complex whole.
Sub-System Smaller systems within a larger system that work together to help the larger system function as a whole
