seasons vocabulary for earth and space science

axis an imaginary line running through the center of the Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole around which the planet rotates
axial tilt the angle of a planet's axis away from vertical
rotation the spinning of Earth on its axis
revolution the movement of Earth in an elliptical orbit around the Sun
orbit the gravitationally curved path that Earth follows as it travels around the Sun
hemisphere one half of the Earth divided by the equator into the Northern and Southern hemispheres
equator an imaginary line drawn around the middle of the Earth at an equal distance from both the North and South poles
direct sunlight sunlight that travels in a straight, concentrated path, hitting the Earth more intensely and causing warmer temperatures
indirect sunlight sunlight that strikes the Earth at an angle and is less concentrated, resulting in cooler temperatures
solstice the time twice a year when the Sun is farthest north or south of the equator, marking the longest day (summer solstice) or shortest day (winter solstice) of the year
equinox the time twice a year when the Sun is directly above the equator and day and night are of equal length globally (marking the start of spring and fall)
At what angle is Earth's axis tilted at? 23.5 degrees
What takes 24 hours and causes day and night? a rotation
What takes 365.25 days (one year) and causes the seasons? a revolution
