General Pharmacology and Medication Administration

TermDefinition
Pharmacodynamics The study of what a medication does to the body, including its mechanism of action and effects.
Pharmacokinetics The study of what the body does to a medication, including absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME).
Therapeutic Effect The intended or desired effect produced by a medication.
Indication A medical condition or situation in which the use of a particular medication is appropriate or necessary.
Contraindication A condition or situation in which a medication should not be administered because it could cause harm or worsen the patient’s condition.
Adverse Effect An unintended, undesirable, or harmful response to a medication.
Generic Name The official, nonproprietary name of a medication that identifies its active drug, such as acetaminophen.
Trade Name The brand name given to a medication by its manufacturer, such as Tylenol®.
Enteral Administration of medication through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, such as by the oral or rectal route.
Parenteral Administration of medication by a route that bypasses the gastrointestinal tract, such as intramuscular, subcutaneous, or intravenous administration.
Standing Orders Written protocols that allow EMTs to provide specified treatments or medications without contacting medical control for each individual patient.
Medical Control A physician or other authorized medical authority who provides online or offline medical direction to EMS personnel.
