TermDefinition
Pediatric Assesment Triage (PAT) A rapid assessment tool used to evaluate a child’s appearance, work of breathing, and circulation to the skin.
Pediatric Airway Differences Children have a larger tongue, smaller airway, and narrower trachea, making airway obstruction more likely than in adults.
Rapid Deterioration The ability of a child to appear stable for a period of time and then suddenly become critically ill, making frequent reassessment essential.
Infant A child approximately 1 month to 1 year old. Common concerns include respiratory illness, dehydration, choking, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Toddler A child approximately 1 to 3 years old. Common risks include choking, poisoning, falls, burns, and other accidental injuries.
Adolescent A person approximately 12 to 18 years old. Common EMS concerns include trauma, substance use, mental health emergencies, and risk-taking behaviors.
Older Adult An adult generally 61 years of age or older in the EMT lifespan framework. Common concerns include falls, stroke, dementia, chronic illnesses, and medication-related complications.
Polypharmacy The use of multiple medications, which can increase the risk of medication interactions, side effects, and adverse reactions.
