Checks and Balances A system that allows each branch of government to limit the powers of the other branches so no single branch becomes too powerful
Divine Right of Kings a political and religious doctrine asserting that a monarch recives the power and authority to rule directly from God
Electoral College The official system used in the United States to indirectly elect the president and vice president
Head of Government The cheif of the executive branch who runs the daily operations, sets policy, and manages the cabinet and civil service of a nation
Head of State The highest ranking public representative and official leader of a sovereign country
Hereditary Monarchies Form of government where a ruler inherits the position through family bloodline upon the previous monarchs death or abdication
Matriarchy A political and social system where women hold primary power, authority, and leadership roles
Monarchy Form of government where a single person serves as the lead of state
Parliamentary System A democratic form of government where the executive and legislative branches are merged
Patriarchy A political and social system in which men hole primary power
Presidency The position, office, or function of a president as well as the specific term of office or administration during which a president serves
Presidential System Democratic for of government where an elected president serves as both the head of state and the head of government, operating independently from the legislative branch
Prime Minister The head of government in a parlimentary or semi-parliamentary system
Seperation of Powers A constitutional design that divides state government responsibilities into distinct branches to prevent any single branch from holding absolute power
