commensalism a symbiotic relationship that benefits one species but does not harm or benefit the other
community all the populations living in an ecosystem at the same time
consumers an organism that cannot make its own food and gets energy by eating other organisms
detritivores an organism that consume the bodies of dead organism and wastes produced by living organism
ecosystem all the living things and nonliving things in a given area
energy pyramid a model that shows the amount of energy available in each link of a food chain
food chain a model that shows how energy flows in an ecosystem through feeding relationships
food web a model of energy transfer that can show how the food chains in a community are interconnected
glycolysis a process by which glucose, a sugar, is broken down into small molecules
limiting factor a factor that can limit the growth of a population
mutualism a symbiotic relationship in which both organisms benefit
overpopulation condition that occurs when population becomes so large that it causes damage to the environment
parasitism a symbiotic relationship in which an organism benefits and the other is harmed
photosynthesis a series of chemical reactions that convert light energy, water, and carbon dioxide into the food-energy molecule glucose and give off oxygen
population all the organisms of the same species that live in the same area at the same time
producers an organism that use an outside energy source, such as the sun, and produces its own food
symbiosis a close, long-term relationship between two species that usually involves an exchange of food or energy
