SEASONS PHASES OF THE MOON TIDES

QuestionAnswer
Why do we have seasons? The seasons are caused by tilt of Earth’s axis as it moves around the sun.
More sunlight on northern hemisphere Summer
More sunlight on southern hemisphere Winter
➢The different shapes of the moon visible from Earth. Phases
It takes about __ days for the moon to complete a full cycle of phases from full moon to new moon and back again. This is called a: 29.5, Lunar Month
Occurs when the shadow of one body in space falls on another. ECLIPSES
During a new moon, when a new moon is between the sun and Earth, Earth may pass through the shadow of the moon. SOLAR ECLIPSE
During a full moon, when Earth is between the sun and moon, the moon may pass through Earth’s shadow. Lunar Eclipse
• Are the regular rise and fall of ocean waters. • caused mainly by differences in the moon’s gravitational pull on Earth. TIDES
are when the water reaches its highest point. HIGH TIDES
are when the water reaches its lowest point. LOW TIDES
Occur during the new moon and full moon phases. The Sun, Moon, and Earth are aligned in a straight line. Their gravitational forces combine, producing: Higher high tides and Lower low tides Result: the greatest difference between high and low tide. SPRING TIDES
Occur during the first quarter and third (last) quarter moon phases. The Sun and Moon are at right angles to each other relative to Earth. Their gravitational pulls partially cancel out, producing: – Lower high tides – Higher low tides neap tides
Strong tides (largest tidal range). Spring tide
Not extreme tides (smallest tidal range). Neap tide
is an area where direct light from a light source cannot reach due to obstruction by an object. It occupies all of the space behind an opaque object with light in front of it. shadow
as the Sun seems to disappear during the day and the sky darkens in a matter of minutes. Eclipse
This region is the darkest part of a shadow. UMBRA
the region in which only a portion of the occulting body is obscuring the light source. PENUMBRA
The region from which the occulting body appears entirely contained within the disc of the light source. ANTUMBRA
is a type of eclipse that occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks ("occults") the Sun. This can happen only at new moon. SOLAR ECLIPSE
Occurs when the dark silhouette of the Moon completely obscures the intensely bright light of the Sun, allowing the much fainter solar corona to be visible. TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE
occurs when the Sun and Moon are exactly in line, but the apparent size of the Moon is smaller than that of the Sun. ANNULAR SOLAR ECLIPSE
Shifts between a total and annular eclipse. HYBRID SOLAR ECLIPSE
Occurs when the Sun and Moon are not exactly in line and the Moon only partially obscures the Sun. PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE
occurs when the Moon passes directly behind the Earth into its umbra (shadow). (in "syzygy") LUNAR ECLIPSE
occurs when the whole moon disappears as it passes through the Earth's umbral shadow. TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE
occurs when a portion of the moon passes through the Earth's umbral shadow. PARTIAL LUNAR ECLIPSE
is when the moon passes through the Earth's penumbral shadow, but this is very difficult to see. PENUMBRAL LUNAR ECLIPSE
