Physical Methods

| Moist Heat | Protein Denaturation, kills vegetative bacterial and fungal pathogens and almost all viruses within 10 minutes. Less effective for endospores |
| Autoclave | Protein denaturation, 15 psi pressure and 121 degrees Celcius for 15 minutes |
| Pasteurization | Protein denaturation. Heat treatment for milk 72 degrees for 15 minutes |
| Direct flaming | burns contaminates to ashes |
| Incineration | burns contaminates to ashes |
| Hot Air sterilization | Oxidation - very effective 170 degrees for 2 hours |
| Filtration | separation of bacteria from liquid. Used if heat can damage contents |
